type='text'>Scope of Biochemistry - Will I get a job ?

While talking to many of the students and to some of my counterparts in the city, I noticed that many of them feel that there is no or little scope for biochemistry. They are actually confusing between the words "Scope" and the "Jobs" after studying biochemistry.
Scope means the areas where one can get into and Job means getting into one.
After studying Biochemistry (BSc or MSc) you can get into the following areas ( with necessary extra skills):
1. Diagnostic labs in hospitals ( you need to complete Medical Lab Technician course).
2. Research and Development wings of industries manufacturing all the products that are used in our body, i.e., soaps, shampoos, tooth pastes, perfumes, talcs etc. because all these products involve the effectiveness in interacting with various biomolecules in our body. And this can be done effectively by a Biochemist only.
3. e-Publishing in scientific journals and magazines.
4. ITeS - IT enabled services - this includes Medical Transcription, Medical Coding, Medical Billing.
5. Off late Online tutoring is getting more demand, especially from US, UK and other europeran countries.
If you like to set up your career in the area of biochemistry you can get into any of these.
For all of these areas you definitely require good communication, interpersonal skills, and basic computer knowledge.
Well, getting a Job depends on the vacancies and the expectations of those companies.
Cheers :)
Biochemistry is difficult to study

Many nutrition course students feel scared about biochemistry. Most of them, especially those from home science, and nutrition background feel worried about drawing structures.
There is no need to remember the structures of all the bio-molecules for students majoring in nutrition or nursing. If they can remember the names and the reactions it is sufficient. (What we call word equation - eg. glucose + ATP = glucose-6-phosphate) what they need to know is the fate of nutrients ingested; the location of the biochemical reaction of such nutrients inside a cell.
Learning the structures is important for students of pharmacology or pharmacy courses ( DPharm, BPharm, MPharm, MSc Pharmocology)
Biochemistry is not the only subject that is difficult ( if you feel it is difficult). And it doesn't mean that you pass in all other subjects and fail only in biochemistry. If such is the case, I can help anybody out of that. Just mail me.
:)

What is in a name?

Can Biotechnology course be offered under a science stream ? I feel that the term technology is relevant only when offered under an engineering stream (BE or BTech). Therefore, the term Biotechnology is a misnomer in an arts and science college when offered as a BSc or MSc course.
I always get this doubt.
How can a technology degree be offered under a science stream ? this is also similar to MSc information technology course. Why should such "technology- labeled" degrees be offered under Science streams when the same is offered in engineering discipline also ?
There is something in the name " technology" . The name of the zoology course is changed to "Animal Biotechnology ..." and botany course is changed to "Plant Biology and Plant Biotechnology". There is more glamour for the name than the subject.
:)

Deos Biochemistry have future?

Does Biochemistry have future ? AMPK activation depends on phosphorylation of the α catalytic subunit on threonine-172 (Thr172) by kinases LKB1 or CaMKKβ, and this is promoted by AMP binding to the γ subunit. AMP sustains activity by inhibiting dephosphorylation of α-Thr172, whereas ATP promotes dephosphorylation. Adenosine diphosphate (ADP), like AMP, bound to γ sites 1 and 3 and stimulated α-Thr phosphorylation. However, in contrast to AMP, ADP did not directly activate phosphorylated AMPK. In this way, both ADP/ATP and AMP/ATP ratios contribute to AMPK regulation.

Movie on Actin filaments in action

Scientists at Yale University and in Grenoble France have succeeded in creating a movie showing the breakup of actin filaments, the thread-like structures inside cells that are crucial to their movement, maintenance and division.
Actin Filaments, Cellular 'Workhorses,' Caught in Action

How Molecules Get to the Right Place at the Right Time

In a multicellular organism, different cells fulfill a range of diversified functions. Often such specialization depends on the delivery of molecular goods to distinct places within a cell. It ensures that particular functions only occur at defined cellular sites. This establishment of intracellular asymmetry in the otherwise fluid environment of the cell cytoplasm requires active transport processes. Messenger RNAs (mRNA) represent an especially important type of freight.
All cells containing a nucleus also possess a cytoskeleton made up of filamentous protein strands that course through intracellular space like a rail network. Motor proteins "walk" along two types of these strands, called actin filaments and microtubules. On their way, they can carry different types of freight like membrane vesicles, messenger RNAs, proteins and even whole organelles. Disruption of these networks can cause chaos and may result in cell death. The motor proteins must recognize and bind to the correct fiber system and to the appropriate cargo. For transport of freight, molecular motors interact with a plethora of accessory factors to form large transport complexes.

Journal Reference:

Marisa Müller, Roland Gerhard Heym, Andreas Mayer, Katharina Kramer, Maria Schmid, Patrick Cramer, Henning Urlaub, Ralf-Peter Jansen, Dierk Niessing. A Cytoplasmic Complex Mediates Specific mRNA Recognition and Localization in Yeast. PLoS Biology, 2011; 9 (4): e1000611 DOI: 10.1371/journal.pbio.1000611

Discovery Identifies Elaborate G-Protein Network in Plants

The most elaborate heterotrimeric G-protein network known to date in the plant kingdom has been identified by Dr. Sona Pandey, principal investigator at the Danforth Plant Science Center. Scientists have recently discovered a novel, evolutionarily conserved mechanism for the regulation of gene expression. Normal cell growth, embryonic development, and responses to stress, require proper spatial and temporal control of gene expression. Studies on control of transcription (RNA biosynthesis) are typically centered on understanding how the RNA polymerase is recruited to the promoter, the control region of a gene. However, new work has revealed the existence of a second level of control in a yeast model system.

Enzyme enhances, erases long-term memories in rats; Can restore even old, fading memories, say scientists

ScienceDaily (2011-03-07) -- Even long after it is formed, a memory in rats can be enhanced or erased by increasing or decreasing the activity of a brain enzyme. He took a cup of water and

put it in the microwave to heat it up (something that he had done numerous

times before). I am not sure how long he set the timer for, but he told me

he wanted to bring the water to a boil. When the timer shut the oven off,

he removed the cup from the oven. As he looked into the cup, he noted that

the water was not boiling, but instantly the water in the cup "blew up"

into his face. The cup remained intact until he threw it out of his hand

but all the water had flown out into his face due to the build up of

energy. His whole face is blistered and he has 1st and 2nd degree burns to

his face, which may leave scarring. He also may have lost partial sight in

his left eye. While at the hospital, the doctor who was attending to him

stated that this is fairly common occurrence and water (alone) should

never be heated in a microwave oven. If water is heated in this manner,

something should be placed in the cup to diffuse the energy such as: a

wooden stir stick, tea bag, etc. It is however a much safer choice to boil

the water in a teakettle.

General Electric's (GE) response:

Thanks for contacting us. I will be happy to assist you. The e-mail that

you received is correct. Microwaved water and other liquids do not always

bubble when they reach the boiling point. They can actually get

superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will bubble up

out of the cup when it is moved or when something like a spoon or tea bag

is put into it. To prevent this from happening and causing injury, do not

heat any liquid for more than two minutes per cup. After heating, let the

cup stand in the microwave for thirty seconds before moving it or adding

anything into it.

If you pass this on ... you could very well save someone from a lot of

pain and suffering.

ProfPTS

http://profpts.googlepages.com

http://www.biochemistryonline.4t.com

Matter ?!

How do we define "matter" ?

is it a particle, substance, atom, electrons or protons, wave, force , energy ?
but we know the properties of it. it occupies space, has weight (mass !), cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted from one form to another.

when we define something, we have to say what it is first then go on to say about its properties ?

any thougths in these lines ?

it is a different matter....Oh !

I have just created a Blog for Biochemistry students .
